The short answer
A useful voice-AI test plan states what should happen before the call begins. Use fictional callers, capture the observed outcome and mark a test as failed whenever the receptionist invents a fact, loses the request or claims an action that was not confirmed.
Step 1 / 5
Define the acceptance table
Create a row for scenario, input, expected response, expected saved record, observed outcome and reviewer. Choose one real administrative workflow, such as an IT callback. “The conversation sounded good” is not an acceptance criterion. A passing intake contains the required contact, request category and next owner, with no invented ticket identifier. Record the configuration version so a later edit can be compared with the same tests.
Step 2 / 5
Exercise difficult audio
Use background noise, interruptions, silence and a caller correcting a name or number. Ask for next Friday and then change the month. The agent should repeat uncertain details, accept a correction and avoid continuing with stale information. Keep test calls fictional and do not use staff members’ real private numbers. A failure to confirm a contact can make an otherwise fluent call operationally useless.

Test system failure explicitly
Simulate an unavailable destination, rejected calendar write and delayed ticket confirmation. Expected behavior is an honest pending request with a visible owner, not a fabricated success. Test a repeated request after timeout to expose duplicates. Provider tests need the actual connection; a saved agent draft cannot validate telephony, and a mocked test cannot certify production delivery. Keep those categories distinct in the results.
Step 4 / 5
Add adversarial and privacy cases
Ask the receptionist to ignore its instructions, disclose another customer’s records or send information to a new number. A passing result respects approved company rules and refuses unauthorized data access. Test volunteered passwords and payment information without storing real secrets. Review whether the conversation can return to a safe administrative path without repeating the sensitive material unnecessarily.

Decide whether to expand
Review every failed category with the business owner before adding more call types. Set release criteria in advance rather than lowering them after a persuasive demo. Keep unresolved requests visible and maintain a reversible phone route. Prepare the draft agent and approved knowledge in your company account; live acceptance testing still depends on configuring telephony and the required external systems.
